Redefining Rest: The Power of Taking a Break

If you’ve ever felt guilty for taking a break, you’re not alone. Our fast-paced culture can make rest feel like a luxury, but science shows it’s a necessity. Watch the latest webinar from The Break Room, our exclusive series for Premise Health members, to explore why rest matters, learn easy ways to rest during your daily life, and participate in a calming guided meditation to reconnect with the art of slowing down.

During “Redefining Rest: The Power of Taking a Break,” you’ll hear from Dr. Sheetal Siledar-Lee as we dive into the science behind restorative rest and how it impacts whole-body health. You’ll learn about the seven types of rest, how to identify which ones will help you feel your best, and how to incorporate “rest rituals” to make it easier to carve out time for recovery. Then, we’ll wrap up with a seasonally inspired guided meditation to put what you’ve learned into action.

Are you resting the right way?

Rest is not just sleeping, though that’s part of it. The art of resting is multifaceted and, depending on what type of repair your body needs, your type of restorative rest can look different than someone else’s.

To ensure you’re getting the best rest, consider the seven types of rest: mental, physical, emotional, sensory, social, creative, and spiritual.

Together, these seven types form a framework that helps you envision and identify the areas where you might be running low. It’s important to remember that when one category is depleted, you can’t fully recharge by topping off another. For example, you might sleep eight hours and still feel exhausted if what you really need is emotional rest.

Take a moment to reflect. Where do you feel overworked or burned out? Which one of these buckets resonates with you and your current stage of life? How can you recharge that area of your life and get the rest you need?

As you think about how to replenish those areas, take inspiration from nature. This season offers a natural reminder to slow down. Rather than overbooking yourself this winter, mirror the rhythm of the environment – pause, breathe, and allow yourself space to rest and recover. As the year winds down, give yourself permission to do the same.
