Premise Health CISO Shares Healthcare Cybersecurity Expertise with MedCity News

Premise Chief Information Security Officer Joey Johnson recently shared his thoughts with MedCity News on the evolving cybersecurity landscape in healthcare, highlighting the continued need for good cyber hygiene and taking a measured approach when implementing new technologies and AI tools.

In recent years, cyber threats and breaches have been on the rise. In “The Next Cyber Crisis Is Inevitable — and Healthcare Isn’t Ready,” MedCity News’ Katie Adams spoke with healthcare cybersecurity experts, including Johnson, regarding some of the biggest threats organizations are facing and proactive actions they can take to stay ahead of cybercrime.

Alongside the rapid adoption of AI tools, many organizations are unintentionally opening themselves up to potential risks and vulnerabilities, “…there’s emergent technologies that are trying to combat fire with fire and use AI to achieve better user awareness into technofarious activity, but it’s still a cat and mouse game, of course.”

Johnson adds that there are other contributing issues, including potential gaps in cyber awareness for smaller organizations, known vulnerabilities remaining unpatched, and a lack of accountability or expertise when onboarding new technologies. The first step in addressing those issues, Johnson says, comes with regular maintenance of basic cyber hygiene practices and by establishing adequate security guardrails before rushing to adopt new tools and technologies.
