Premise CHRO Liz Reimer Offers a Practical Approach to Recovery-Friendly Workplaces in Employee Benefit News
In Employee Benefit News’ (EBN) workplace culture column, “Benefits Think,” Premise Health’s Chief Human Resources Officer Liz Reimer published the editorial, “A practical approach to recovery-friendly workplaces enhances employee health and wellness.”
In it, Liz covers the tenets of what a Recovery Friendly Workplace is and makes the business case that these policies aren’t just a ‘nice to have,’ they’re essential to improving the health and wellness of any workforce as a whole, not just those directly affected by substance use disorders.
“For employers, the hidden cost can be substantial, from losses in productivity to higher rates of absenteeism, workplace accidents, or even life-threatening scenarios,” said Liz. “Whether you know it or not, you’ve likely interacted with someone who has been affected personally or through family, friends, or co-workers.”
So, what does a recovery friendly workplace look like? Before answering, Liz notes that every organization’s ideal policy is going to look different, but it’s important they start with a goal in mind and introduce policies gradually. From there, her answer is largely three-fold. It’s a workplace that demonstrates support for recovery: through its culture, hiring and benefits programs, and team member education.
What that boils down to are simple, yet effective policy updates, like offering “substance-free options” at sponsored events (such as water or mocktails, in addition to water), instituting flexible work policies so team members can address their health and wellness needs when they arise, and providing periodic communications about recovery related benefits information, such as EAP resources or behavioral health coverage.
Liz closes the editorial by saying, “The road to recovery is a collective effort.” When organizations implement Recovery Friendly Workplace policies for their people, they’re addressing more than just the root issue. They’re delivering sustainable solutions to create change for their people, providing long-term benefits, both measurable and personal, for employee and their families.
